What is Customer Segmentation?

Customer segmentation is the process of dividing customers into groups based on common characteristics. These characteristics can be demographic (age, income, family size), geographic (location), psychographic (lifestyle, values), or behavioral (spending habits, brand loyalty). The goal is to tailor marketing strategies to each specific segment, enhancing customer engagement and satisfaction.

Different types of customer segmentation include:

  1. Demographic Segmentation: Involves dividing the market into groups based on variables such as age, gender, family size, income, occupation, education, religion, race, and nationality.
  2. Geographic Segmentation: Dividing a market into different geographical units such as nations, states, regions, counties, cities, or neighborhoods.
  3. Psychographic Segmentation: Takes into account the psychological aspects of consumer behavior by dividing markets according to lifestyle, personality traits, values, opinions, and interests of consumers.
